Green Baby Bottles

As a new mom, I am always trying to find the most eco-friendly and safe items for my baby. The Bay Area has many options for purchasing green products, and that includes baby bottles. Target is even starting to carry eco-friendly options. Knowing there is so much concern about the use of plastic baby bottles that contain Bisphenol- A (BPA), which has been considered harmful to humans since the 1930’s, I wanted to find a safe alternative. I did some research and found and tested some great other options.

BornFree makes great baby products including BPA free plastic bottles and great newborn glass bottles. I picked up 2 5-ounce bottles that included nipples, covers, and a new air vent system. The breast pump I selected was also made by BornFree, which worked out really well. I found the bottles to be extremely successful and reasonably priced – around $20.00. BornFree also makes non-plastic trainer cups and drinking cups for your toddler that are safe and eco-friendly.

Another company that has been making alternative baby bottles is Evenflo. They have been making baby products for 85 years! Evenflo make classic glass bottles in a variety of sizes for a bit cheaper (3 4-ounce bottles for about $10.00). The bottles are shaped differently than the BornFree model, making them a little more challenging to clean. Evanflo also makes bottles out of Tritan that are BPA free, but not as environmentally safe as glass.

Kleen Kanteen makes a unique and colorful reusable bottle made from recycled stainless steel. They have created a bottle that is adaptable with an Avent attachment, so infants can use it as a bottle and then as a sippy cup later. Kleen Kanteen’s 12-ounce bottles are made for little ones, so they are definitely fun and colorful! They are an investment costing around $20.00 and then an additional $3 to $10.00 for attachments. Knowing kids, you might find these tend to get lost, so get a couple of them.

Another alternative to plastic baby bottles is glass bottles from Dr. Brown’s. Due to their unique air flow system, Dr. Brown’s bottles have been favorites of parents for years. They are available in environmentally friendly glass bottles for around $10.00 for 2 7-ounce baby bottles. These bottles are enjoyed by many, but challenging to clean! They are long and slim, and contain lots of parts. You can purchase replacement parts if needed!

One of the best-known baby companies, Gerber, is also creating alternative baby bottles. You can purchase a set of 3 comfort hold glass 5-ounce baby bottles for around $30.00. These bottles are short and squat, making them easy to hold and easy to clean. Gerber products are available just about anywhere, and are reasonably priced.

No matter which bottle you decide to use, remember feeding your baby is a special bonding time! Using an environmentally friendly bottle helps keep our Earth, and your baby, healthy!
